Believe it or not, this is the question we’re asked the most.
Your clothing is everything. A plaid shirt can make or break a picture. A suede jacket can be a cool accessory or a cheesy costume piece. A pastel colored blouse can be a real hit, or a real miss.
So, what’s the secret to picking the perfect “looks” for your session?
Our #1 Rule: Keep It Simple.
Generally speaking, avoid costumes, accessories, heavy layers, big patterns, bright colors, and logos. Plain clothes are best.
Our #2 Rule: Put Some Thought Into It.
Choosing your outfits, is the single most important thing to do in preparation for your headshot session, aside from getting a good night’s sleep.
Your wardrobe is everything, and it can be an expensive mistake if you don’t take the time to plan ahead. Making last minute decisions hours before your session is a recipe for disaster.
That doesn’t mean you have to run to the mall the day before, looking for something interesting or new. You most likely have everything you need in your closet at home. It might not seem like it when you’re staring at the same clothes you’ve been wearing for years, but trust me, that Target t-shirt you bought last summer, and that hand-me-down sweater you got from your best friend in college, are often times the perfect choices.
You’ve got to spend some one-on-one time with your own closet.
Start throwing stuff on and look in the mirror. Is the outfit wearing you? Are you trying to look like someone you’re not? Is that vintage leather jacket pulling focus from the only thing we should be looking at: YOUR FACE?
Less is more.
Our #3 Rule: Wear Things That Make You Feel Confident.
Pick things you know and trust. If it’s that black strappy tank top or that white button down you always wear to auditions, great! If it’s your favorite navy blazer and dark grey V-neck from Zara , great! Grab the denim jacket that everyone compliments you on at parties. Bring those old jeans that you feel sexy in.
If you’re shooting fitness, stay simple. You want to show your rockin’ bod, not the funky sports bra or polka dot leggings.
Look at photos on your phone. What outfits do you look killer in? Ask your friends what they love.
Our #4 Rule: Test It Out.
Have someone takes some photos of you in each look. Your roommate, your neighbor, your mom, whoever will take some quick shots. And if you’re alone, make it a selfie party. Choose clothing that makes you pop, but keep in mind, you’re the star of the show.
